The Magic Stone
“Believing is seeing.”
–Judy, the Elf
A wise sage told a man that there was, somewhere on a vast beach of stones that surrounded a bottomless lake, a Magic Stone that would transform anything it touched into pure gold. The Magic Stone could only be recognized by taking the time to pick it up, feel its warmth and find it’s faint glow. The sage told the man where to find the beach. His quest would be to search for the stone until he found it.
The man traveled to the spot and found a rock covered beached that bordered an incredibly beautiful, impossibly deep, turquoise-colored lake. Legend told that millions of years earlier a meteorite had struck in this very spot, creating the bottomless lake and the stones that surrounded it. This was a magical spot indeed.
Determined to find The Magic Stone, regardless of how long it took, the man picked a starting point on the beach, bent over and pick up the first stone — feeling for the warmth and looking for the glow.
This was not the Magic Stone.
So as not to pick it up again, he threw the stone into the water. He picked up another stone, looked at it and whispered to himself — “This is not it.” and threw it into the water. After a few minutes, the man got into a rhythm — picking up stones, looking at and feeling them quickly, whispering, “This is not it.” and throwing them into the bottomless depths of the lake.
Minutes turned into hours turned into days…. and the man kept going, becoming faster and more mechanical at picking up, looking at, feeling and throwing stones — faster and faster he went, so he could make his way through the tens of thousands of stones on the beach…..this is not it, this is not it, this is not it…..thousands and thousands of times — over and over again…..
One more time the man bent over, with determined speed, barely feeling, faintly looking…. and as the stone he’d just dismissed splashed into the turquoise water of the bottomless lake, the feeling of warmth still on his finger tips — he saw the disappearing glow he’d been searching for….
May you live and share each and every moment in full awareness of the Magic that surrounds us always.
Merry Christmas!
